for the temporary support of precast concrete, CLT panels and structural steel during construction

New Zealand-wide
screw deadmen and prop hire

WHAT WE DO

We design and supply temporary screw deadmen and propping systems for the support of precast concrete, CLT panels and structural steel

OUR PROPS
Certification

All props are designed, manufactured, maintained and certified as required by the WorkSafe Good Practice Guidelines, Safe Work with Precast Concrete Elements - Handling, Transportation and Erection of Precast Concrete Elements.

Maintenance

All props are serviced at the completion of every job. This includes a visual inspection, and threads and swivels wound and lubricated to ensure all props are in a safe and usable condition.  Any damaged props are removed from service for repair or replacement.

OUR DEADMEN

0800 Deadmen introduced helical screw anchors to the New Zealand construction space in 2009 as screw deadmen for temporarily supporting precast concrete. 0800 Deadmen is a national leader in the use of this technology for this purpose.

Screw deadmen are now the preferred choice of temporary support for precast concrete, CLT panels and structural steel.

All screw deadmen are designed in house, manufactured by certified welders,  and certified to the relevant New Zealand Standards to suit New Zealand conditions.

Drive heads are locally sourced and periodically calibrated using our dynamic wireless load cell / brake bed to give an accurate gauge pressure against actual torque for all screw deadmen drive heads used.

All screw deadmen systems are specifically designed for each job using the internationally recognised "installation torque" method, with installation torques monitored for each screw deadmen installed.

Proof loading can readily be carried out on site with our purpose built testing frame.

0800 Deadmen uses a multi helix type screw anchor that is installed axially to the props supported. A significant advantage of this system is that 0800 Deadmen can anchor in a wide variety of ground conditions, with the ability to extend the screw deadmen with further screw deadmen until the required installation pressures are achieved.

Over the past 15 years 0800 Deadmen has installed thousands of screw deadmen and generated a large database of ground conditions that are suitable for the use of screw deadmen.

ENGINEERING AND DESIGN

From the outset 0800 Hireprop and 0800 Deadmen had a philosophy of a proper and transparent approach to the design and installation of the temporary deadmen and propping systems.

We take a conservative approach and don't take shortcuts - near enough is not good enough for us. We design to the relevant Codes and hardware capacities and do not get involved in projects where the client does not have the same philosophy.

0800 Hireprop and 0800 Deadmen employs qualified engineers to design all screw deadmen and propping systems. These designs are regularly peer reviewed and scrutinised by clients, and rarely criticised.

Unlike many of our competitors, we carry $1.0M of Professional Indemnity Insurance for all screw deadmen and propping systems we design.

Each project comes with a specific design for each precast concrete element, and a markup of the precast concrete shop drawings that shows the deadmen setout positions and panel fixing positions in an easily readable colour format.

We offer a complete propping solution covering the design, installation, hire and removal of screw deadmen, and delivery, hire and pickup of props.

ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE

Temporary corner brackets as a substitution for props.

Top saddle brackets for use on panels that cannot have proprietary fixings in the face.

Timber/threaded rod panel whalers to keep panels in a straight line and for load sharing

Safety bolts - we carry a range of MKT High Load Safety Anchors

WHO WE ARE

Our History

0800 Hireprop Ltd was established in 2003 as the result of the need for a safer and more professional approach to the design and supply of precast concrete propping systems in New Zealand.

At that time there existed for the most part a blasé attitude to the design and supply of precast concrete propping systems. That started to change in May 2002 when the Department of Labour introduced its Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Handling, Transportation and Erection of Precast Concrete. Until that time the industry was left to its own devices as to appropriate design standards and operational safety parameters. As a result, standards were poor.

In October 2018 the Code of Practice publication was reissued in the form of the Good Practice Guidelines for the Safe Work with Precast Concrete - Handling, Transportation and Erection of Precast Concrete Elements (GPG). 0800 Hireprop had a representative on the the Committee that assisted WorkSafe in producing that publication. To this day the GPG remains the guiding light of temporary propping system designs in New Zealand, which 0800 Hireprop steadfastly follows.

0800 Deadmen Ltd was established in 2009 to fill a hole in the construction space as to suitable deadmen systems for use with temporary propping systems. Up to that time deadmen systems were generally limited to buried blocks, ground beams and slabs, and expensive mass poured concrete deadmen. These latter deadmen not only being time consuming and expensive to construct, but expensive and disruptive if required to be removed.

The introduction to New Zealand in 2009 by 0800 Deadmen of a screw anchor deadmen system heralded the start of a new way to construct temporary deadmen. By 2019 screw deadmen became mainstream with further screw anchor systems entering the construction space.

Screw deadmen are now widely accepted in the industry as the preferred deadmen system for the temporary support of precast concrete, CLT panels, and structural steel, outside of using ground beams / slab on grade or burying mass concrete blocks.

The 0800 Deadmen screw deadmen system is quick to install and remove, is extremely versatile in its use with small and craneable installation equipment, can be installed in a wide range of soils (including weaks soils), and importantly is more economical compared with the mass poured concrete alternative. 0800 Deadmen can readily install over 100  screw deadmen in a working day from a single man operation, meaning we have been and gone before you even know it. In addition, each screw deadmen comes complete with prop fixing bolts. A particular quality assurance feature of 0800 Deadmen screw deadmen is that the fixing bolts are single use and every bolt / nut is replaced after use.

As to time, screw deadmen can be loaded and used immediately following installation, and unlike concrete no cure time is required.
